A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Central Sulawesi on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at 10:27 a.m. Western Indonesia Time. BMKG recorded that the earthquake occurred at coordinates 1.04° South Latitude and 120.23° East Longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was located around 42 kilometers southeast of Palu City. Although the tremors were felt in several areas, BMKG confirmed that the earthquake had no potential to trigger a tsunami.
This event once again reminds us that Indonesia is located in an area with high seismic activity. For this reason, communities need to continue strengthening preparedness in order to protect themselves and those around them when disasters occur. In addition to understanding the risks, people also need to know the right safety steps to take during an earthquake.
What Should You Do During an Earthquake?
When an earthquake occurs, quick and appropriate action can help reduce risk. Therefore, pay attention to the following steps:
1. Stay calm and do not panic
Staying calm helps us think more clearly so we can make the right decisions in an emergency situation.
2. Protect your head and neck
If you are inside a building, immediately take cover under a sturdy table or piece of furniture. Then, use your hands or any available object to protect your head and neck.
3. Stay away from risky areas
In addition to finding shelter, avoid areas with glass, cabinets, shelves, or heavy objects that may fall.
4. Move to a safe place once the shaking stops
Once conditions allow, evacuate in an orderly manner to an open area. If you are outdoors, stay away from buildings, electricity poles, and large trees.
5. Follow information from official sources
Make sure the information you receive comes from BMKG, BNPB, local government, or other official sources. This helps communities avoid unverified information.
Preparedness is a shared responsibility. Therefore, every family and community needs to build habits that support safety when facing disasters. The knowledge we have today can help reduce risks and protect more people in the future.
