Citra, an Active Student with Outstanding Achievement

Risma Citra M. is an 13 year-old outstanding student of grade 8 MTs Negeri 9, Gunung Kidul. The teenager who is usually called Citra is an orphan. Her father died when she was little, in 2009 to be exact.

Although Citra still has her mother, she chooses to live with her father’s grandfather and grandmother. This is because his mother lives in a very far away area and has remarried. Her mother occasionally visits Citra to see how she is doing. However, the visit time is uncertain, it could be once a year. When her mother visits her, she usually brings donuts for Citra.

Citra’s grandpa works in the fields growing various crops, such as cassava, beans, and corn. Not only that, her grandfather also raises several livestock, namely cows and goats. Citra’s grandma is in charge of processing the cassava by drying it to become a food product. In addition, she also makes tempeh from soybeans every day. The tempe production will be delivered to the market every 2 days for sale.

To Human Initiative team, they said that usually, Grandpa takes Grandma’s tempeh products to the market every 2 days. The average turnover from selling this tempe is between Rp. 90.000,00 – Rp. 100,000.00 with a capital of Rp. 60,000.00, consisting of Rp. 40,000.00 for tempe ingredients, Rp. 10,000.00 for firewood and the remaining Rp. 10,000.00 for production wages.

Citra, who loves Javanese lessons and loves to draw, also often helps her grandmother to wash clothes, wash dishes, and clean the house. Citra’s other hobby is playing badminton. She usually play with her seniors in front of the house every Sunday morning.

It didn’t stop there, because Citra was an active high-achieving student, she also participates in scouting, drumband, and volleyball activities at her school. On the sidelines of her activities, Citra often takes the time to draw. Some of Citra’s works are displayed on the wooden walls of her house.

Conditions of Citra’s Grandpa and Grandmother’s House

Citra’s house is mostly made of wood. In fact, for daily cooking they still use firewood and the availability of water there is very difficult. This is because Gunung Kidul is a dry area, making it difficult to find water sources there.

In order to meet daily water needs, Citra’s Grandpa builds a rain-fed system. Rainwater that falls on the roof tiles will flow and be accommodated into a water reservoir made of bricks and cement. Later, this rainwater will be deposited for later use such as bathing and washing water.
