Empowering Women Through Lombok Traditional Weaving

Empowering Women Through Lombok Traditional Weaving

8 September 2021

Weaving is one of Indonesia’s cultural heritages. It has to pass through a quite long process. Weaving requires not only perseverance, but also a desire to preserve Indonesian culture. One of the figures who are still loyal to Non-Machine Weaving Equipment (ATBM) in his old age, is Oma Min from Lombok.

Oma Min, or Amanda Welhelmina Langoru (74 years) is a Larat flower weaving craftsman whose work has been enjoyed in various parts of the world. In addition, there is also another type of typical woven fabric produced by Oma Min, namely the Tanimbar ikat weaving.

Not only Tanimbar ikat weaving, there are also Pringgasela Woven Fabrics made by skilled and nimble mothers, in Gubuk Lauk Hamlet, South Pringgasela Village, East Lombok.

No less popular than the Tanimbar ikat weaving, the Pringgasela Woven has also penetrated the world market, especially Japan and America. Pringgasela woven fabric is a legacy from generation to generation that still maintains traditional weaving methods to maintain product quality.

The Covid-19 pandemic condition has made weaving craftswomen have high hopes for the woven fabrics they have produced to make a living. Moreover, the condition of Enforcement of Restrictions on Community Activities (PPKM) has limited all people’s movement. But this did not stop them from giving up.

Human Initiative dan Tenun Tanimbar

Human Initiative as a humanitarian institution, also supports women’s empowerment activities to continue to preserve Lombok’s unique woven fabrics. In collaboration with Pertamina, Human Initiative provides mentoring programs and facilities needed by groups of women craftsmen of Tanimbar Woven Fabrics.

Weavers from Pringgasela Village have also received attention. Thanks to the results of the empowerment followed by the support of facilities and assistance from Human Initiative, the women of Pringgasela Weaving Fabrics until now continue to make weaving as a hobby as well as to fill their time during the PPKM period due to the prolonged pandemic.
