Earthquake Strikes Afghanistan, Thousands Affected

Jakarta, 2 September 2025 – Southeastern Afghanistan was hit by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake on Sunday night (31/8) local time. The epicenter was located near the border of Nangarhar and Kunar provinces, with a relatively shallow depth, causing strong tremors across multiple regions.

The earthquake, which struck just before midnight, caused severe damage in several provinces, especially Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman, and Nuristan. Thousands of people are reported to be affected, with many injured and left homeless. More than 600 homes were either destroyed or severely damaged, while several roads were cut off by landslides, complicating rescue and evacuation efforts.

In some districts, such as Chawkay and Nurgal in Kunar Province, and Dara-e-Nur in Nangarhar Province, conditions remain dire. Many residents have had to walk for hours to find safe places or access medical aid. Local authorities have evacuated the injured to hospitals in Jalalabad and Asadabad and have deployed heavy machinery to reopen blocked roads.
