Floods Hit South Sulawesi, Human Initiative Helps Evacuate Affected Residents

Makassar – Heavy rain since early Monday (13/2) which poured South Sulawesi Province caused floods in a number of areas including the city of Makassar. This condition is exacerbated by the occurrence of rising sea water. As a result, the suburbs and the center of the city are inundated with a height of up to 1 meter.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a weather early warning for the South Sulawesi region. According to BMKG monitoring, heavy rain is expected to occur from 12-16 February 2023.
The Mayor of Makassar, Mohammad Ramdhan Pomanto, directly inspected the affected locations to ensure community safety. He also said that all Regional Apparatus Units (SKPD) in the city of Makassar were ready to handle the incident.
“We, together with all SKPD in Makassar city, went to the field today to ensure that the people are safe,” he said.
“To all Makassar residents, let’s save ourselves and our families. We urge you not to leave the house for the time being. Traffic is also not conducive and many vehicles are trapped in the flood. We are also on standby to carry out the process of evacuating residents, especially those who are sick,” concluded the Mayor of Makassar.
Human Initiative Helps Evacuate Affected Residents
In response to the incident, South Sulawesi Human Initiative (HI) Team has coordinated with related parties. HI volunteers in the field also helped with the evacuation process in one of the affected areas.
“Currently we have coordinated with several parties. We have also sent a team of volunteers along with rubber boats and rescue cars to help with the evacuation process for affected residents,” said Swadi, Head of the South Sulawesi Human Initiative Branch.
