Facing the Covid-19 Pandemic, Human Initiative Develops Citizen Food Barns

29 July 2020

Yogyakarta – When the Covid-19 pandemic has not subsided, residents of Sidobali RW 08, Mujamuju, Yogyakarta, have a smart way to survive. Namely working together to look after the food barns in their area.

Not only contains vegetables and fruits, the food barn also contains catfish cultivation in the GOS Tank. No doubt the way the residents of Kampung Sidobali RW 08 have received appreciation from many parties. One of them is the Human Initiative.

Through the Covid-19 Period Food Sovereignty program from Human Initiative, this community-owned food barn received assistance in the form of plant seeds, planter bags, planting media, fertilizers, and feed for catfish.

This food barn, which is operated by gentlemen, also gets support from mothers and also local youth. Therefore, the activities for maintaining the food barn, which consist of watering plants, feeding catfish, and draining the ponds, are routinely carried out by the residents together.

Its location on the edge of the village road makes the food barn easily accessible to anyone. Not only as a provider of food needs for residents, food barns are also a means of tourism and education for local residents. Every afternoon the area is always crowded with children playing together or local residents who just relax and unwind.

It is hoped that this assistance for food storage will support the food needs of the people during the pandemic period. It is easier for residents to access food sources that are nutritious, healthy and free of pesticides.

“With this program, the community will be helped by their daily needs,” said Mrs. Sunarsih, the head of PKK RW 08 Mujamuju. (Yani / HI Facilitator)
