Indonesian Tree Planting Day: A Flashback to Planting 1000 Mangroves on Semut Island

November 28 is commemorated as Indonesian Tree Planting Day. This is in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Number 24 Year 2008. In November 2008, the President made a declaration at the Limnology Research Center, Cibinong Science Center, LIPI. The President at that time conveyed his message to the public regarding One Man One Tree (OMOT).
The point is, the President expects the movement of at least one person to plant one tree. This policy was inspired by the Women’s Movement to Plant Trees and the Simultaneous Planting Action which took place one year earlier, namely in 2007. At that time, the number of tree plantings exceeded the initial target so that it had a better impact on the environment.
Human Initiative Plants 1000 Mangrove Trees
In line with one of the Human Initiative actions in collaboration with Pertamina Sei Siak, last September a planting of 1000 mangrove trees was carried out on Semut Island, Limbungan Baru Village, Rumbai District.
Experimental planting of 120 mangrove seedlings with rhizophora species became the main agenda of this activity. In addition to the Human Initiative volunteers, the Head of RT, Head of RW, Lurah Limbungan, and the entire Limbungan community were also enthusiastic in participating in this event. They were seen working together to come down to plant trees.
The village head of Limbungan, Welfina Sari Harahap, plans to develop the existing rice fields by communicating with the parties concerned. He said that the Limbungan Baru Village, Pulau Semut is the only area that has rice fields in Pekanbaru, Riau. So, there is great hope to get attention for tourism potential.
Meanwhile, the Limbungan community hopes that this activity can have a good impact on the environment and increase the tourism potential of Semut Island.
