International Call’ Sounds, 6,497 Teams of Volunteers from Various Countries Came to Turkiye

11 February 2023

Turkiye – Since Turkey released the ‘International Call’ on the first day of the earthquake (6/2), AFAD noted that 6,497 teams from various countries had contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to offer assistance and dispatch teams to the affected areas. Human Initiative is one of the 6,497 volunteer teams that entered Turkey. Coordinating with government authorities in Indonesia, Human Initiative is also collaborating with various domestic alliances and collaborating partners in Turkey.

“On humanitarian grounds, we hope to do our best for Turkey. Doing good together with thousands of volunteers who come from various countries,” said Tomy Hendrajati, President of Human Initiative.

Currently, Human Initiative volunteers are in Turkey with local collaboration partners. Human Initiative continues to coordinate the distribution of basic needs for earthquake survivors.

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said that the evacuation process was hampered due to heavy snowfall in almost all regions of Turkey and damaged access roads. This made it difficult for the evacuation team to move to save the tens of thousands of residents who survived and were buried under the rubble of buildings. Turkish authorities have deployed 120,334 officers to carry out search and rescue. Officers who are a combination of the government and the local community have also been deployed to help search residents.

In the AFAD Press Bulletin on 10 February 2023 at 20.50 WIB, it was recorded that 70,347 people were injured and 17,134 people died in 10 Provinces, Turkey. As many as 8,300 buildings collapsed due to the earthquake, and it is estimated that 300,000 people in the 10 areas lost their homes. Even so, currently 75,800 people have been evacuated to a safer place with the evacuation process by land (including using trains) and air routes.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 23 million people in the region need assistance. The magnitude 7.8 earthquake disaster with a large impact, made Turkey declare a three-month state of emergency in 10 affected provinces, and seven days of national mourning.
