The heavy rainfall that has been pouring over Jabodetabek since Sunday night (March 2) has caused flooding in multiple areas, including South Jakarta, East Jakarta, Bekasi, and Bogor Regency.
In Bekasi, several sub-districts were flooded, affecting thousands of residents. Overflowing rivers and the high intensity of rainfall worsened the situation. Reports indicate that some houses were submerged in water up to 1 meter deep. Residents from severely affected areas were evacuated to safer locations, while authorities and humanitarian workers continue to provide basic necessities to flood survivors.
Human Initiative, in collaboration with donors, responded swiftly by deploying volunteers and providing ready-to-eat meals at the Pondok Gede Permai evacuation post, Bekasi, West Java (March 5).
Human Initiative deployed the HI-MATE humanitarian mobile unit along with a team of volunteers to assist survivors at the evacuation post. The HI-MATE unit provided:
Children at the evacuation post felt a sense of joy and relief as volunteers engaged them with motivational support and entertainment. The presence of volunteers helped ease their boredom during their time at the shelter.
Volunteers remain on standby 24/7, ensuring that survivors feel safe and have access to daily necessities while they remain in the evacuation post.
Due to the severe flooding in Jabodetabek, many affected residents chose to remain at the evacuation post, fearing the possibility of further floods. However, their decision to stay in the shelter made it easier for Human Initiative volunteers to distribute food and essential aid to those in need.
