Worried About Further Floods, the Masamba and Baebunta People Stay at the Emergency Post

LUWU UTARA – After the flash flood that occurred last Monday 13 night, the residents of Masamba and Baebunta Subdistricts, North Luwu Regency, are still haunted by the fear of a further flood.

They have not dared to return to their respective homes and chose to stay in a number of emergency posts established by the North Luwu Regency Government and their family homes in high altitude areas, which were not affected by the flood.

This fear is also due to the news that rain is still falling in the Meli Mountains which can cause flash floods with water mixed with mud.

A number of Masamba residents chose to stay in several emergency posts and homes of families or other residents in Lamiri Hamlet, Kamiri Village and Balebo Kamiri.

In this area, most of the people who fled came from Podo Sa’pe and from Laba Village, Masamba District. Particularly in Laba Village, there are still several houses that were not so badly affected by the flood that they have also been used as posts or places to accommodate residents affected by the flood.

Admil, a resident of Poso Sa’pe Hamlet who took refuge in Lamiri Hamlet, said that the water that entered the residents’ houses reached the breasts of adults, even the water level in the yard of the house reached 2 meters.

“In my house, sir, the water is as high as chest, even in front of the house, the water is two meters high. The worst flood was in Radda Village, Baebunta Subdistrict, there reportedly had died and several residents were still missing,” he said.

On the border of Baebunta and Masamba Subdistricts, which is the boundary between Radda Village and Kampuna Village, precisely at the chocolate monument, local residents in these two villages are still displaced.

Residents’ houses still look empty, especially residents of Radda Village as the worst affected area and affected by flash floods.
