Learning Amid Limitations: Fathan’s Hope to Return to a Proper School

Floods and landslides struck several areas in Aceh and brought major changes to the lives of local communities. Rising water and landslide debris damaged homes, disrupted daily activities, and affected public facilities, including schools. As a result, many children had to adjust when the classrooms they once used were no longer safe for learning.

Fathan is 10 years old and currently in the fifth grade of elementary school. Before the disaster, he spent his days like many children his age. He studied in a classroom with his friends and dreamed of continuing his education. However, the school where he studied was damaged, forcing classes to move to a temporary tent.

Inside that tent, Fathan now attends lessons every day. The flood swept away his school uniform, books, and other learning supplies. Many of his classmates faced similar losses. Even with these challenges, Fathan continues to show up and learn alongside his friends.

Studying in a tent is not always easy. The heat often disrupts concentration and makes lessons feel more difficult. Despite these conditions, Fathan remains determined to follow each lesson. He wants to understand his studies and maintain his routine so he does not fall behind.

In a simple way, Fathan shared his hope. He wishes to return to a proper and comfortable school building like before. “Hopefully there are kind people who can help our school,” he said. This hope is shared by many children in Aceh who are currently studying under limited conditions.
