Learning to Manage Public Trust for Humanity, UI Faculty of Public Health Master’s Students Visit Human Initiative

Students from the Master’s Program of the Faculty of Public Health (FKM), Universitas Indonesia, visited the Human Initiative Head Office on June 9, 2026. Through this field visit, the students learned about the practical management of a humanitarian organization while also seeing how various concepts they study in class are applied in the field.

During the presentation and discussion session, the students gained a closer understanding of Human Initiative’s journey as a humanitarian organization. They learned about various programs in the fields of health, education, economic empowerment, disaster response, and global humanitarian action. In addition, the students also explored how Human Initiative manages resources and public trust to support various humanitarian programs.

This activity helped the students connect theory with practice. For example, they observed the application of the concepts of input, process, output, management functions of planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling (POAC), as well as the Theory of Change in organizational and humanitarian program management. In this way, the students gained a more concrete understanding of management practices in the humanitarian sector.

One participant, Fahda Hindriyana W.P., said she gained a new perspective on humanitarian organizational governance.

“Through this visit, I saw that Human Initiative provides a small-scale picture of how a country is managed. Funds from the community are collected, managed, and then distributed back to the community through various beneficial programs,” she said.

In addition to learning about program management, the students also understood the importance of accountability in maintaining public trust. They were also introduced to the role of strategic communication in building relationships with various stakeholders. This visit showed that humanitarian values can go hand in hand with professional and structured governance.

Meanwhile, collaboration with educational institutions opens space for knowledge and experience exchange for Human Initiative. Through this interaction, students can view various social and humanitarian issues from a broader perspective. At the same time, academia and field practice can enrich one another’s insights.
