Mbah Suriyem, the Backbone of the Family at the Age of 70

27 January 2022

The Covid-19 pandemic has left a lot of misery, especially for those who had difficult life before Covid-19. Mbah Suriyem is one of the elderly who has had to experience difficulty of living during this Covid-19 pandemic. Every day she has to sell food in Parangtritis Beach tourist area, feeling the bitter slap of the PPKM period during a never ending pandemic.

Mbah Suriyem, a seller of pecel rice and various fried foods, had to change professions to become a scavenger at the beginning of the pandemic until the PPKM period in 2021. Until finally, in the middle of last September, Mbah Sariyem decided to sell again because she saw other traders had started to return to the market.

The daily needs of life has urged Mbah Suriyem to return to selling, even though the income was not as good as in the pre-pandemic period. She has to return home with her unsold food. Before the pandemic, she could go home at 1 pm, then continue selling again in the afternoon. However, during a pandemic like this she has to work from 10 am to the afternoon and hope that all his food runs out.

Mbah Suriyem is the backbone of the family even though she is almost 70 years old. But she has to keep hee spirits up because her son was sick at home. He could not walk and is always waiting for her to come with money to buy him painkillers. She just wanted to treat her son, she could take her son to the hospital. But it is impossibe due to her economic situation.
