Philippines Earthquake Situation Report #1: More Than 3.2 Million Students Affected

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck offshore Sarangani Province, Mindanao, the Philippines, on Monday, June 8, 2026. The tremor damaged settlements, public facilities, and infrastructure across several affected areas. The Government of the Philippines, together with relevant agencies, is currently continuing search efforts, emergency response operations, and damage assessments.

Based on initial data compiled from Philippine government authorities and local sources, at least 19 people have died, more than 12 people are missing, and 134 people have been injured. The earthquake also affected the education sector. Local authorities temporarily suspended teaching and learning activities in more than 6,200 schools, affecting over 3.2 million students. The tremor damaged houses, schools, hospitals, government buildings, and various other public facilities. Damage to roads and bridges has hampered access to several communities.

To date, local authorities have recorded more than 138 aftershocks that are still being felt by the community. Amid these conditions, affected communities urgently need humanitarian support, including food assistance, temporary shelter, health services, psychosocial support, and the restoration of access to clean water and electricity.

Efforts and Follow-Up Plans

The Government of the Philippines, humanitarian organizations, and local partners continue to carry out post-earthquake response efforts in the affected areas. Search operations, impact assessments, and community needs mapping are still ongoing in several locations.

Human Initiative is currently communicating with partners and community leaders in the affected areas to verify humanitarian needs on the ground. On June 9, 2026, local partners are scheduled to hold an emergency meeting to align information and identify evolving assistance needs within the community.

Meanwhile, local partners, together with the Philippine Red Cross and local humanitarian organizations, are mobilizing teams to conduct a rapid needs assessment. Human Initiative continues to monitor the situation and is preparing to conduct a rapid assessment should urgent needs be identified that have not yet been addressed by local authorities.
