Dear Initiators,
Eid al-Adha is approaching, a special time when Muslims are encouraged to perform qurban (sacrifice). When selecting a sacrificial animal, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure that your qurban is valid and in accordance with Islamic law. Here are three things that are often overlooked when choosing a sacrificial animal:
1. Age of the Qurban Animal
The qurban animal must have reached the minimum specified age. For goats or sheep, the minimum age is 1 year; for cows or buffaloes, the minimum age is 2 years; and for camels, the minimum age is 5 years. Ensure you choose an animal that has reached the minimum age. In general, the age of a sacrificial animal can be determined by its teeth structure, but don’t hesitate to ask the breeder directly as well.
2. Health of the Animal
The qurban animal must be healthy and free from contagious diseases. Observe signs of animal health such as bright eyes, clean fur, and a good appetite. Avoid choosing animals that appear weak, lethargic, or have wounds.
3. Physical Defects
The qurban animal must be free from permanent physical defects. Defects such as blindness in one eye, permanent lameness, or broken teeth can invalidate the qurban. Make sure you choose an animal that does not have any permanent physical defects.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “The best qurban animal is the fattest and most beloved by its seller” (Hadith narrated by Abu Dawood). In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) provides guidance on choosing a sacrificial animal of the best quality.
