Ramadan for Everyone: The Story of Supardi, the Crossing Guard at the Railway Gate

Road users often neglect their safety at railway crossings. It’s not uncommon to see motorcyclists daringly passing through the closed railway gates. However, this action is very dangerous—not just for themselves but also for the train passengers. Amid these challenges, there is a figure who diligently ensures safety at the railway crossing. He is Supardi (58), a safety guard at the Singoyudan railway gate in Karangsari, Semarang.

For Supardi, being a railway crossing guard is not an easy job. He must be firm when dealing with riders who attempt to pass through the closed gates. Their safety is his responsibility. Even when he has to face angry or stubborn individuals, Supardi always accepts these trials with sincerity and patience.

“I do this job with the intention of ensuring the safety of train passengers and road users. Whether it rains or shines, I do it sincerely so that everyone stays safe,” said Supardi when meeting with Human Initiative volunteers.

Working Without Expecting Anything in Return

Supardi has been working as a crossing guard at Singoyudan for a year, assisted by five others working in two shifts: the first shift from 6 AM to 2 PM, and the second shift from 2 PM to 10 PM.

His income is relatively small—only Rp1 million per month for his six-member family. However, Supardi never complains. He feels content with what he receives. He has never asked for payment from road users, even though some residents voluntarily give him a small token of appreciation as a thank-you.

The Gate that Brings the Community Together

The Singoyudan railway gate was once closed due to a brawl in the area. For two weeks, the community had to take a long detour. Now, the gate has been reopened, and Supardi and his colleagues continue their duties with dedication.

Supardi’s determination and spirit in carrying out his work have inspired many, including Human Initiative. The organization was moved to provide gifts to Supardi and his colleagues as a gesture of appreciation and support. It is hoped that these gifts will ease their burdens, especially as they go through the month of Ramadan and approach Eid.
