Rob Floods in Semarang and Surrounding Areas, Human Initiative Distributes Ready-to-Eat Food and Clean Water

27 May 2022

Semarang – Tidal waves hit the waters north of Java resulting in tidal flooding on Monday (23/05). A number of areas in Semarang City, Demak Regency, Pati Regency, and Pekalongan City are affected. The flooding was exacerbated by the breaking of the seawater embankment which was not strong enough to withstand tidal waves. As a result, the floods cause floods in residential areas, factory and industrial areas to rice fields.

In the Lamicitra area of Tanjung Emas Port, Semarang, workers were sent home in anticipation of the higher levels of water. As of Monday night (23/05), volunteers were still evacuating factory workers. Meanwhile, in Sriwulan Village, Sayung District, Demak, around 10,000 people from 8 RWs were affected by the tidal flood. Since Monday (23/05) until today, the electricity has gone out, disrupting residents’ activities such as cooking, personal hygiene, and the need for clean water. The tidal flood also hit the northern coastal area of Pati Regency due to tidal waves of sea water. Nine villages from three sub-districts were affected. There were no fatalities in this incident, but residents’ activities were disrupted due to the puddle of water.

Meanwhile in Pekalongan City, a number of areas were inundated due to tidal flooding. According to BPBD Pekalongan City, there are six evacuation points to accommodate 221 survivors.

Human Initiative Response to Rob Flood

Human Initiative together with volunteers carried out an initial response in flood-affected areas in Semarang City and Demak Regency. They carried out an initial assessment and evacuation of residents in the Tanjung Mas Port Area as well as the evacuation of residents of Sriwulan Village, Sayung, Demak.

The response continued on Tuesday (24/05) by distributing 500 boxes of ready-to-eat food to Sriwulan Villagers. The blackout since Monday has disrupted the residents’ activities. Residents cannot cook and the supply of clean water is very limited. They need fast food and clean water. The next action plan, Human Initiative, will provide ready-to-eat food and drop clean water for residents affected by the tidal flood in Sriwulan Village, Sayung District, Demak.

Ridho, Secretary of Sriwulan Village, thanked Human Initiative’s response. He also hopes for assistance for the following days in the form of clean water and food logistics. Ridho said that currently there are three field kitchens that meet the needs of around 10,000 affected residents.

Meanwhile, M. Subhanudin Nasrullah, Head of the Human Initiative program, expressed his gratitude for the concern of the donors for this initial response and hopes that they can provide other urgent needs widely in the areas affected by the tidal flood.

Initiator Friends, the tidal flood that hit the city of Semarang and its surroundings made it difficult for our brothers and sisters there. Let’s help them by donating through Solusipeduli.org. I hope this incident will pass soon so that people can carry out their activities normally.
