Strengthening Each Other: A Gift of Kindness for Vina and Her Mother

My name is Rina*, the mother of Vina*, my little angel who is now 10 years old. From the moment I first held her tiny fingers, I knew our lives would not be easy. Vina was born with microcephaly and cerebral palsy. While other babies learned to crawl, she remained lying down. While other children began to run, she remained in my arms—the only world she could understand.
Every day, I am her eyes, her hands, and her feet. I feed her, bathe her, and change her diapers. Not because I want to limit her, but because she cannot do these things on her own. Sometimes, she cries for no reason, and all I can do is hold her close, whisper prayers, and hope for a miracle.
Life is full of challenges. My husband, a garment factory worker, can only come home once every two weeks. Even then, his earnings barely meet our daily needs. To survive, we rely on my mother—Vina’s grandmother—who works as a farm laborer.
I want to work, but how could I? I cannot leave Vina alone. Even going to the market is difficult—I have to ask for a neighbor’s help or pay for an expensive motorcycle taxi. Our home is far from the main road, far from the access that could ease our burdens.
Vina’s needs are many. Diapers, milk, nutritious food—all of it is expensive. Sometimes, I wonder, what about tomorrow? What will happen if her grandmother becomes too weak to work? What if I fall sick? But I cannot give up—I am the only one Vina can depend on.
I don’t ask for much. I just want Vina to have a better life—enough food, proper care, and the love she deserves from a world that often overlooks children like her.
