Sumatra Flood and Landslide Response 2025 Reaches 26,499 Affected People

Heavy rainfall since late November 2025 has triggered floods and landslides across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. In several areas, rainfall intensity exceeded 300 mm and was associated with the dynamics of Tropical Cyclone Senyar. As a result, rivers overflowed, slopes collapsed, and residential areas were severely affected.

Over time, the impact of the disaster expanded to multiple locations. As the emergency response approached its first month, Human Initiative implemented a coordinated humanitarian response. This November–December 2025 general report presents updates on the response for partners and stakeholders.

According to BNPB data as of 23 December 2025, more than 1,112,000 people were affected across 52 districts and cities, with 502,570 people displaced. In addition, 176 people were reported missing. Damage was recorded to 158,096 houses, along with impacts on public facilities, health services, educational institutions, places of worship, and bridges.

During the initial phase, Human Initiative activated six main posts and 16 sub-posts across the three provinces. A total of 151 personnel were deployed for search and rescue operations, evacuations, and needs assessments. All actions were carried out in close coordination with local disaster management agencies, regional governments, local volunteers, and 25 humanitarian organizations under the Humanitarian Forum Indonesia.

By the end of December 2025, Human Initiative had reached 57 subdistricts across 25 districts and cities, as well as 82 villages and urban wards. The total number of rights holders reached 26,499 people, comprising 6,034 people in Aceh, 13,220 people in North Sumatra, and 7,245 people in West Sumatra. Assistance provided included search and rescue support, clean water services, food assistance, hygiene kits, bedding kits, school supplies, and community kitchens.

Human Initiative has now entered the recovery phase. At this stage, 179,450 people have been identified as potential rights holders. Recovery planning is underway in seven districts and cities and 24 villages and urban wards across the three affected provinces.
