The Criteria for Those Who Can and Cannot Perform Qurban According to Islam

Dear Initiators,
Qurban is one of the important rituals in Islam. Many of us are aware of the recommendations and the great rewards that Muslims will receive when performing it. However, the act of performing Qurban is not obligatory for every individual. Islam, as a merciful religion, provides space for those who face financial limitations. So, how does Islam define the criteria for those who can and cannot perform Qurban?

Citing from lampung.nu.or.id, Islam encourages those who are financially capable to perform Qurban. This means that for those who do not have sufficient economic means, they are not obligated to perform Qurban and should not feel burdened.

In these challenging economic times, many of us may feel that we are not yet able to perform Qurban. Therefore, let us take a deeper look at the opinions of scholars regarding who is considered able and unable to perform Qurban.

Who Is Considered Able to Perform Qurban?
The majority of scholars from the Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali schools agree that performing Qurban is Sunnah Mu’akkadah—a highly recommended act of worship. This means that if we perform it, we will be rewarded, and if we do not—provided we are not able to—there is no sin.

A person is considered able to perform Qurban if they have sufficient wealth after fulfilling their own and their dependents’ basic needs. Additionally, during the days of Qurban, including the three Tashrik days (11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah), one is considered able to perform Qurban if they meet the aforementioned criteria.

This is in line with a narration from Ibnu Abbas, where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“Three things are obligatory for me, but Sunnah for you: Witr prayer, Qurban, and Dhuha prayer.” (Narrated by Ahmad and al-Hakim)

What If One Is Not Able?
For Initiators who are not financially able at this time, there is no need to feel guilty. Islam understands the priority of basic life needs. If a person has funds but still cannot meet the basic needs of their family, providing for their family remains the priority.

However, the spirit of worship does not have to stop there. There are still many acts of worship we can perform during the month of Dhul-Hijjah, such as Dhikr, Arafah fasting, increasing charity, and other good deeds that are also deeply beloved by Allah.

Distribute Qurban Through Human Initiative
For Initiators who have extra blessings this year and are able to perform Qurban, let us channel our Qurban through a trusted Qurban distribution organization, Human Initiative. Through the Sebar Qurban program, many people in need will feel the blessings of this act of worship.

Qurban Distribution Program by Human Initiative has a wide coverage: reaching 25 provinces, 116 regencies/cities, and 9 international regions, targeting distribution to over 225,000 beneficiaries. This is a tangible manifestation of the spirit of #QurbanSalingMenguatkan, strengthening our brothers and sisters in need, while also empowering local farmers.

Let us be a part of this movement of goodness. Visit solusipeduli.org for Qurban distribution programs.
