The Story of Afif* from the Deaf Santri Pesantren and the Strengthening Qurban

Afif*, 13 years old, is a student at the Darul Ashom Deaf Pesantren in Sleman, Yogyakarta. Despite having difficulty hearing, he and his friends learn to recite the Qur’an with enthusiasm. They read the Qur’an in sign language, memorize hadiths with hand movements, and support each other in doing good deeds.

One day, Human Initiative came to distribute qurban at their pesantren, Pesantren Khusus Tunarungu Darul Ashom, in Depok, Yogyakarta.

There was no sound of takbir echoing, but happiness was clearly visible on Afif’s and his friends’ faces when they received the qurban meat. For them, this wasn’t just meat, but proof that there are brothers and sisters who care.

“I am happy,” Afif signed. “Thank you to the donors.”

When Ustadz Salman Aljugjawi from Human Initiative came to distribute the qurban, he asked Afif to share two hadiths from the Prophet Muhammad that he liked the most. With his flexible hands, Afif signed:

“Indeed, good deeds erase bad deeds. And when goodness comes, badness will no longer follow.”

“There is no obedience to creatures when it leads to disobedience to Allah.”

At the pesantren, Afif and his friends learn that goodness can come in many forms. Sometimes it comes in the form of enthusiasm to memorize, and other times in the form of qurban meat shared with sincerity. What matters is that they continue to support each other.
