A Quest for Clean Water for Three Villages in Tasikmalaya

11 April 2023

As a humanitarian organization, Human Initiative has many stories of seeking spaces to do good. One of them is the story of searching for a water source for three villages in Tasikmalaya, West Java.

Dear Initiators, did you know that low rainfall alternates every month in different regions of Indonesia?

Dodo Gunawan, Acting Deputy of Climatology at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated this in a recent media release in February 2023. In short, he said that rainfall with an accumulation of less than 100 mm per month will occur alternately in various regions of Indonesia from March to August this year.

Furthermore, BMKG has released a list of regions in West Java Province that will experience a dry season from May to August. Based on this data, Human Initiative has chosen three villages in Tasikmalaya that face water scarcity every year during the dry season.

The areas identified by Human Initiative include Kampung Campaka, Desa Padawaras, and Desa Gunung Tumpeng. When the dry season arrives, these three villages struggle to obtain clean water. Residents must access steep roads, and many have to walk up to 1 km to fetch water from the Cikaengang River.

Human Initiative’s Productive Charity Efforts: Coming Together for Goodness

Acts of kindness can have a greater and more far-reaching impact when done together. This was exemplified by Human Initiative and Amal Produktif as they fulfilled the hopes of the people in Kampung Campaka, Padawaras, and Gunung Tumpeng villages.

On February 16, 2023, Human Initiative and Productive Charity jointly inaugurated the Clean Water System Program, realizing the hopes of the residents of Campaka Village, Padawaras Village, and Gunung Tumpeng Village. This collaborative program takes a community empowerment approach, involving drilling wells up to 80 meters deep, building reservoirs, constructing electrical panels, and setting up piping systems to deliver water to residents’ homes.

The residents enthusiastically welcomed this program, expressing their gratitude during the inauguration ceremony attended by over 40 people. “Alhamdulillah, we are very grateful to Productive Charity and Human Initiative for their assistance. Campaka Village has faced challenges in accessing clean water every year, and with this support, we hope to meet the daily water needs of our residents,” said Sutisna, Head of Cempakasari Village, in his remarks.

Yano, Head of the West Java Human Initiative Partnership Division, acknowledged that the success of this program was a result of cooperation among various parties. He expressed hope that the availability of clean water would benefit the community in the long term.
