Human Initiative Helps Flood Affected Residents in Bengkulu

Tuesday (30/8), Human Initiative Bengkulu Together with a team of volunteers took part in an emergency response to the flood disaster that hit a number of areas in Bengkulu Province. Heavy rain since Monday afternoon, 29 to Tuesday, August 30, 2022 in the early hours of the morning caused a number of points in Bengkulu Province to be flooded. Floods occurred due to overflowing rivers in various areas, namely Muko-Muko, North Bengkulu, Central Bengkulu, Bengkulu City, Seluma and Kaur. Dozens of villages have been flooded and some villagers are isolated. Meanwhile, residents’ access roads between villages are also cut off.

Human Initiative conducted a rapid assessment in several flood locations. The team also coordinates with BPBD and Basarnas as well as the Village Head. Asnawi, the head of Pagar Dewa Village, said that there were 25 heads of families and 100 people who were affected by the flood and 1 one-roof early childhood, elementary and junior high school suffered material losses. Furthermore, he conveyed that the 1-2 meter high flood also paralyzed residents’ activities.

Human Initiative Response

Human Initiative team provided assistance in several affected areas. The assistance is in the form of ready-to-eat meal packages, basic necessities, public kitchens, water kitchens and suitable clothing. In total, 360 Families benefited from the assistance. The aid was distributed to Pagar Dewa Villages, Taba Penyengat Village and Genting Village in Central Bengkulu and Sukamerindu Village in Bengkulu City.

The affected communities badly need ready-to-eat food, basic necessities, hygiene kits and medicines. Meanwhile, volunteers from Human Initiative Team are still trying to distribute aid to affected areas.
