River Trekking and Tree Planting Activity, Human Initiative’s Support on World Humanitarian Day

27 August 2023

Jakarta – Human Initiative’s humanitarian workers carried out social activities including a river trekking, tree planting, and plastic waste collection along the banks of the Ciliwung River (August 19th). This activity was a reflection of the celebration of Indonesia’s 78th Independence Day and the observance of World Humanitarian Day 2023, aimed at ensuring that our liberated Earth remains preserved and sustainable for human existence.

This social activity along the banks of the Ciliwung River is part of the Human Initiative’s 2023 Humanitarian Week events. The activity was a collaboration between Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Human Initiative, Human Initiative Volunteer Energy (HIVE), and the Ciliwung Bambon Community. A total of 23 participants trekked along the river from Saung Bambon to Saung Kedaung in Lenteng Agung, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta.

“This activity is to commemorate Independence Day. It’s not just about celebrating freedom, but it’s our effort to maintain that freedom by preserving nature through clean-up activities and tree planting along the Ciliwung River,” said Subur Rojinawi, the Commander of DRM Human Initiative Rescue.

He further revealed that the river trek experienced by the riverside community also serves as an educational tool. The hope is that the community is inspired and joins in safeguarding the Earth by maintaining a sustainable environment through acts of goodness.

Eka Septianingsih, one of Human Initiative’s humanitarian workers, expressed that the Ciliwung River trekking activity was unforgettable for her. Apart from building new relationships, this activity increased her awareness of environmental conservation. According to her, this activity is very important, especially during Independence Day, as it strengthens the spirit of love for the country.

“Moreover, if possible, such activities should be carried out regularly as our effort to protect our beloved Earth. May we always be people who respect the Earth, our home, and show care for others,” Eka concluded.
