Terms and Conditions for Qurban Animal We Must Know

18 May 2023

For Muslims, who doesn’t want to perform the Qurban? It is a special form of worship as a means of getting closer to Allah Ta’alaa and giving benefits to many people. Therefore, it is important to understand the conditions for selecting a Qurban animal.

The following article by Human Initiative summarizes some of the terms and conditions that we must know regarding the Qurban animals.

  1. Types of Qurban animals

Allah Ta’alaa stated in QS. Al-Hajj verse 34, “And for every people We have prescribed the slaughter (Qurban) so that they mention the name of Allah for the sustenance that Allah has bestowed on them in the form of livestock…“.

According to Imam Nawawi in Al Majmu’ (8: 364-366) as cited by Rumaysho, the Qurban animal must come from livestock, specifically camels, cows, and goats. This includes all types of camels, cows, goats, such as sheep, ma’iz, and others.

It’s important to note that the Qurban of one goat is intended for one person only. However, the reward of the Qurban may be intended for a larger number of family members or deceased individuals.

On the other hand, for those who choose to sacrifice cows, the names of seven people can be included, and for camels, the names of 10 people can be included. However, there is another opinion stating that camel sacrifice only includes the names of seven people.

  1. Age of the Qurban animals

According to Jabir radhiyallahu ‘anhu, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Do not slaughter except musinnah. Unless it is difficult for you, then slaughter the jaza’ah from the sheep,” (HR. Muslim no. 1963).

The terms ‘Musinnah‘ and ‘Jaza’ah‘ may be unfamiliar to the readers. Musinnah refers to a Qurban animal that has grown up and changed teeth. Jaza’ah is a sheep that is between six months and one year old.

According to the well-known opinion among Fuqoha (fiqh expert), a musinnah goat is one that is one year old or has entered its second year. Musinnah cattle are two years old or in their third year. As for camels, they must have completed five years or be entering their sixth year.

  1. No deformities

According to Shahih Fiqh Sunnah 2: 370-375, there are six categories of defects that affect the status of a Qurban animal. These categories are divided into two groups: defects that invalidate the status of the Qurban and defects that are makruh (disliked by Allah).

The defects that invalidate the Qurban include one-sided blindness, obvious blindness, illness, obvious pain, a limp, obvious lameness, or is very old to the point where they lack bone marrow.

On the other hand, there are two defects that are considered makruh: part or all of the ears being cut off, or broken horns. Defects that do not affect the Qurban animal or can be considered minor include tooth loss or having no tail.
