The 3 Most Frequently Asked Questions About Qurban by Human Initiative

2 July 2023

Depok, West Java – Since 1998, Human Initiative (HI) has been continuously assisting the community year after year. HI serves as a conduit for Qurban worship and ensures its benefits reach every corner of Indonesia. However, people often have questions about Human Initiative’s Qurban program. Based on Human Initiative’s Customer Relations Management (CRM), here are the three most frequently asked questions:

  1. Is it permissible to perform Qurban without witnessing the animal we are sacrificing?

This question is commonly asked by prospective Qurban donors, particularly those who are performing Qurban for the first time through an institution like Human Initiative. These donors are interested in the distribution of Qurban benefits to various regions within Indonesia and abroad.

In response to this question, Human Initiative follows the majority opinion of scholars. The Book of Fathul Mu’in states, “It is Sunnah for a person to slaughter the animal themselves and witness the Qurban to the person representing the slaughter.”

  1. Is Online Qurban legal in Islamic law?

Before performing Qurban through a humanitarian agency, it is natural to question the validity of online Qurban.

Human Initiative refers to the fatwa (religious ruling) issued by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), specifically fatwa no. 36 of 2020. The fatwa states that “online Qurban carried out with a tawkil agreement is valid.” A tawkil agreement allows the Qurban donor to delegate a certain amount of money to a specific individual or institution responsible for performing the Qurban rituals, including the slaughtering and appropriate distribution of the Qurban animals.

  1. Does Human Initiative select the Qurban animals?

Every year, the topic of the health and quality of Qurban animals becomes a subject of discussion. To address this, Human Initiative collaborates with relevant government agencies to select and ensure the health of the Qurban animals.

As a global humanitarian organization, Human Initiative also partners with local breeders and channels to guarantee the availability of Qurban animals that meet the required criteria. This collaboration involves monitoring the cleanliness of the animal enclosures, administering vitamins, and taking preventive measures against the transmission of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) among the livestock.
