WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY PRESS RELEASE 2022

19 August 2022

The climate emergency is wreaking havoc around the world on a scale that the humanitarian community and people on the front lines cannot manage. Time is running out for the millions of the world’s most vulnerable people – those who have contributed the least to the global climate emergency but have been hardest hit. Millions of people have lost their homes, livelihoods and livelihoods.

Let’s take a look at the press release for World Humanitarian Day 2022 below:

WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY PRESS RELEASE 2022

Jakarta, 19 August 2022 – To contribute to increasing public awareness of humanitarian aid activities around the world and the importance of international cooperation, as well as honoring UN humanitarian workers and relevant personnel who have worked in promoting humanitarian affairs and those who have lost their lives in carrying out their duties , the United Nations General Assembly designated August 19 as the World Humanitarian Day (WHD) in 2008. August 19 was designated as to commemorate a humanitarian event of 2003 bombing at United Nations Headquarters in Baghdad that killed 22 humanitarian workers.

The climate emergency is wreaking havoc around the world on a scale that the humanitarian community and people on the front lines cannot manage. Time is running out for the millions of the world’s most vulnerable people – those who have contributed the least to the global climate emergency but have been hardest hit. Millions of people have lost their homes and livelihoods.

Globally, the annual World Humanitarian Day campaign on 19 August advocates for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers. In Indonesia, the Ministry of Social Affairs, the National Disaster Management Agency, and the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture work together with other stakeholders, government, business institutions, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, the Red Cross community, faith-based organizations/institutions, national and international organizations. The United Nations will conduct a series of activities throughout August 2022 with a joint event on August 19, 2022.

In particular, on 19 August 2022, coinciding with World Humanitarian Day, the Refugee and Protection Cluster is one of the cluster mechanisms that handles multi-stakeholder coordination in terms of coordination and management of refugee camps, shelters, drinking water and environmental sanitation, protection of at-risk groups ( children, elderly, women, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable), psychosocial support, security, non-cash assistance, community involvement, and capacity building, conducting rehearsals or simulations of PP Cluster coordination at the central level and in affected areas. This rehearsal was carried out to further strengthen the preparedness capacity of humanitarian actors from the aspect of coordination management that was more effective and focused.

The theme for this 2022 World Humanitarian Day is #ItTakesAVillage – Alone, our impact is limited but together we have tremendous power”. and “Together Stronger” was brought up as a derivative theme of this event to answer the challenges of facing the megacrisis. So it takes a lot of parties to support overcoming various problems, by means of collaboration for the independence of the community.
A proverb says “it takes a village’s size to raise a child. Likewise to support people living through humanitarian crises. This ‘village’ includes disaster-affected people, who are always the first to respond. This includes the global community working together to support them as they recover and rebuild, and it includes hundreds of thousands of humanitarian actors, both volunteers and professionals who provide health and education services, food and water and shelter, aid and hope. Away from the media spotlight, humanitarian workers are working around the clock to make our world a better place. Against tremendous challenges, and often at great personal risk, they relieve suffering under dangerous circumstances.

The United Nations, through its Secretary General, Antonio Guterres and Resident Coordinator in Indonesia, Valerie Julliand, stated that there are 303 million people in need of humanitarian assistance and at least 345 million people experience acute hunger caused by war. In addition, women and girls experience violence and the decline of their rights. As these mega crises unfold every day, humanitarian workers step up to respond. On this World Humanitarian Day we honor their dedication and courage and pay tribute to those who lost their lives in pursuit of this noble cause. They represent the best of humanity.

Indonesia knows a beautiful and simple phrase that conveys the same thing as the theme of this year’s World Humanitarian Day, namely “Gotong Royong” which means the spirit to help each other. Even though the world feels divided and fractured right now, our humanitarian actions are proof that unity and solidarity are still alive and strong. Alone, our achievements are limited but together, we have tremendous power.
