Abil’s Persistence in Learning Makes His Mother Happy

Abil’s Persistence in Learning Makes His Mother Happy

2 November 2021

The youth congress or what we are more familiar with as the Youth Pledge, on October 28, 1928, was precisely the day where the youth at that time made several decisions regarding the ideals of the nation. In particular, the ideals as well as promises to the “homeland of Indonesia”, “the Indonesian nation”, and the “Indonesian language”.

Commemoration of Youth Pledge Day means remembering the services of our previous heroes. They are a reminder that Indonesia is a unity. As youth, it’s good for us to take part in interpreting this celebration according to the current era. For example, look at Abil, a 1st grade student at a public high school in Jakarta who has a high enthusiasm for learning.

Interpreting The Youth Pledge of Abil’s Figure

Abil is the third of four siblings, his two older sisters are married while his youngest brother (Alfed) is still in the 2nd grade of elementary school. Since childhood, Abil have always received good marks in his academic subjects. Not only excelling in his studies, this 1st grader at a State Senior High School in Jakarta is also active in his home environment.

He is currently a futsal coach for his peers in the neighborhood where he lives. He is also actively involved in the Youth Red Cross organization at his school. Although active in activities and learning, Abil did not forget his obligation to study Islamic studies. Abil, who lives in Kemayoran area, Central Jakarta, diligently goes to mushola near his house after maghrib prayer for reciting the Quran .

The boy who is majoring in social studies wishes to be accepted at a state university majoring in economics, because he thinks this major has many job opportunities. Abil wants to repay his mother who has worked hard to become a mother and father for himself and is busy working hard to send him and his siblings to school.

Since his father died, exactly 8 years ago, his mother has become the backbone of the family. She works to meet daily needs, such as food, clothing, housing and education of her children. At first, she chose to become a laundry worker, but due to her age and sore hands from being exposed to too much detergent, his mother chose to quit and look for other sources of income.

Retired from being a laundry worker, Ibu Abil tries her luck by registering as an online motorcycle taxi partner. Now she has delivered various packages through online applications. She has been in this profession for 5 years, unfortunately recently the cellphone s used to get the order was broken, so now his mother can’t work anymore.

Abil Still Studying During The Pandemic

The social inequality of society causes online learning to not always be carried out comfortably by all students. For those who do not have access to signals and adequate electronic equipment facilities, online learning is a new homework for them. Likewise, Abil feels that his cellphone which is too old often hinders his learning activities. Even the cellphone used by his younger brother, Alfed, was completely broken, so his younger brother could not follow the lesson.

Abil was then met by Pak Sarip, one of the administrators of the prayer room where he lived, with Human Initiative scholarship. This program is a scholarship program to prepare the next golden generation of Indonesia that focuses on increasing the knowledge and skills of orphans or poor people. Among these programs is the educational scholarship program that Abil received. Through this program, Abil admitted that he wanted to buy a cellphone so that he could follow the lesson well.

“Every child has the same opportunity to achieve their dreams and work according to their creativity. No exception for orphans and the poor.”
