Earthquake with a Magnitude of 7.5 Hits Taiwan, Triggering Tsunami Warnings to Japan and the Philippines

18 April 2024

On Wednesday (3/4), a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan, making it the strongest earthquake in the last 25 years.

“So far, aftershocks are still frequent in the location,” said the Human Initiative Representative currently at the disaster site.

The earthquake occurred about 18 kilometers southwest of Hualien City, at a depth of about 35 kilometers, and triggered tsunami warnings to Japan and the Philippines.

This earthquake caused very serious damage, including damage to buildings and infrastructure. Among them, a five-story building in Hualien City appeared to suffer severe damage, with the first floor collapsing and the rest leaning at a 45-degree angle. Additionally, old buildings in Taipei collapsed, power outages occurred, and train services were temporarily suspended.

Largest Earthquake Since 1999

In 1999, Taiwan experienced a similar earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6. It was the largest earthquake since the 1935 earthquake. The earthquake caused extensive damage across the island, including the destruction of thousands of buildings and damage to existing infrastructure, such as collapsed roads and bridges, floods, and landslides.

Human Initiative is currently coordinating with Representatives in Taiwan regarding the impact of the earthquake.

Dear Initiators, Taiwan is currently facing a very serious disaster. Let us raise our prayers for the survivors to be given safety and strength in overcoming this disaster.
