Embedding PHBS Habits, Human Initiative and YBM BRILiaN WASH Program Collaboration

31 January 2023

Solok – Human Initiative together with the Baitul Maal Foundation (YBM) BRILiaN inaugurated the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program collaboration in Nagari Sirukam, Solok Regency, West Sumatra (21/1) as an effort to embed Clean and Healthy Behavior (PHBS).

The inauguration of the collaboration between Human Initiative and YBM BRILiaN was attended directly by Mahyeldi Ansharullah as Governor of West Sumatra, Romi Ardiansyah as Vice President of Communication and Development of Human Initiative, and Andri Afrianis as Chair of YBM Brilian Regional Office Padang.

“We convey the mandate of all BRI employees according to what the community needs. Hopefully what we are doing can be used sustainably by the people of Nagari Sirukam,” said the Head of YBM Brilian Regional Office Padang, Andri Afrianis.

Affected by Flash Floods

Nagari Sirukam from Solok Regency was chosen as the location for the beneficiaries of the WASH program for a reason. In 2020, Nagari Sirukam was affected by flash floods which cut off clean water channels from springs to residents’ homes.

After the flash floods, as many as 500 households, whose livelihoods are farming, livestock raising and farming, relied on emergency water sources of poor quality. In addition to water that is not always available, many residents carry water several hundred meters away.

“Before the clean water program from Human Initiative and YBM BRILiaN, I transported my daily water needs using jerry cans from a neighbor’s house which was 200 meters from my house. Thank God, now water is available and clearer,” said Emi, one of the beneficiaries of the WASH program.

Enjoying Water in Bumi Nagari

The WASH program has been going on from July to December 2022. Work has started from rehabilitating water sources and reservoirs (making reservoirs), building water pipe crossing bridges, installing 4-inch PVC pipes 900 meters long, installing 3000 liter capacity water reservoirs, and installing 20 meters. new to residents.

“Hopefully this water can continue to be used by residents who in the future will be managed by UPAB (Clean Water Management Unit),” said Romi Ardiansyah, Vice President of Communication and Development of the Human Initiative.

The Governor of West Sumatra, Mahyeldi Ansharullah added, Solok actually has a source of drinking water that is ready to drink. However, in practice, the ready-to-drink water does not reach residents’ homes because the distance is quite far.

“The WASH program is very useful, because the local community can directly enjoy the produce in Nagari itself,” said Mahyeldi in support of this good collaboration.
