Facing Potential Natural Disasters of Mount Merapi, Human Initiative Conducts Strengthening of Disaster-Resilient Villages

Based on a report from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, as of Wednesday (9/2), the activity of Mount Merapi is still on Alert status (Level III). This makes the surrounding locations ready to face the possibility of a natural disaster of Mount Merapi. One of the locations that have the potential to be affected by the disaster is Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta.

Seeing this, Sunday (6/2) Human Initiative Yogyakarta through the Initiative for Disaster program has strengthened the Disaster Resilient Village (Destana). The program aims to provide education and training to the local community as an effort to reduce disaster risk (DRR). The strengthening program took place in Argomulyo Village, Sleman Regency, which is part of a disaster-prone area. This is because the location is only 13 KM from the peak of Mount Merapi. The strengthening of Destana also received support from Village administration officials. Other community elements such as PKK representatives, Karang Taruna, Linmas, and local volunteers also participated in this program.

Through the Destana program from Human Initiative Yogyakarta, the community is trained to make systematic efforts to independently analyze the causes of natural disasters. Including minimizing the possibility of exposure to hazards, reducing vulnerability, land and environmental management wisely. Making self and family to be prepared in facing the disaster is also one of the strengthening materials. Through these efforts, it is hoped that the community will better understand what they have to do and be more resilient in facing various possibilities.
