Human Initiative Conducts Disaster Preparedness Education at Global Islamic School

15 July 2023

Jakarta – Natural and non-natural disasters often impact the functioning of educational institutions. To address this, Human Initiative, with its Initiative for Disaster Management program, has collaborated with BNPB, BPBD, PMI, and Damkar to promote disaster preparedness in the new school year at the Global Islamic School (GIS) in Condet, East Jakarta.

Human Initiative has partnered with BNPB (National Disaster Management Agency), BPBD (Regional Disaster Management Agency), PMI (Indonesian Red Cross), and Damkar (Fire Department) to provide disaster preparedness education at the Global Islamic School (GIS) in Condet, East Jakarta. This two-day activity took place on July 10 and 11, 2023, involving the school staff of GIS Kindergarten, Elementary, and High School.

The objective of Human Initiative’s disaster preparedness activities at GIS is to integrate disaster preparedness into teaching and learning processes. This is driven by the inclusion of disaster preparedness education as the third pillar in the Disaster Safe Education Unit (SPAB) roadmap, which encompasses all educational units in Indonesia.

Additionally, Human Initiative aligns with the global Comprehensive School Safety (CSS) framework, which emphasizes disaster-safe facilities, management of disaster-safe education units, and disaster risk reduction and prevention education.

“The aim of implementing the SPAB program is to protect residents of educational units from the negative effects of disasters. This includes ensuring the continuity of education services during emergency situations and restoring the functions of education units post-disaster,” said Deni Kurniawan, Leader of the Disaster Risk Management Human Initiative Squad.

The implementation of the SPAB program is expected to achieve broader goals and introduce disaster preparedness education to all students at an early stage. This education will enhance the resilience of students, education staff, and members of other educational units. Importantly, these efforts contribute to individual and community preparedness for disasters.
