Human Initiative Distributes 110 Packages of Basic Necessities and Iftar in Demak Despite Floods

Demak, Central Java – 

On March 31st, the Human Initiative distributed 110 packages of Ramadan goods to the remote areas of Sriwulan Village, Sayung District, Demak Regency, Central Java. Despite the tidal floods in the RW 08 residential area, Human Initiative delivered 110 packages, consisting of 80 packages for ifthar and 30 gift packages.

According to M. Subhanudin Nasrulloh, the Head of the Program Division at Human Initiative of Central Java, several sea points in the area were previously residential areas and rice fields. However, due to erosion caused by abrasion, these areas have turned into a sea.

Subhanudin said, “Here, the road is elevated every three years. As a result, we can see the impact; the houses are lower than the road.”

The non-seasonal tidal floods have affected the area, leaving only 65% of the houses intact. Residents reported that the tidal floods, which occur between 4 pm and 8 pm, reach up to one meter high every day. Due to the flooding, the access road has become difficult to navigate by motorized vehicles. Residents are forced to either wait for the tide to recede or walk-through puddles of seawater.

Human Initiative of Central Java has previously carried out a humanitarian program in the same location before Ramadhan 2023. Now, with the ‘Ramadhan for All’ program, the organization has returned to help the people in the area bordering the sea. Using a wooden cart, Human Initiative delivered 110 packages to residents’ homes, despite the flooded access road.
