Learn to Love the Environment by Exploring the Ciliwung River

15 July 2023

Jakarta – Human Initiative is thrilled to be part of the ‘River Education’ series of events organized by the Khatulistiwa Respon Tim on the banks of the Ciliwung River, near BNI City Station, Sudirman, Jakarta (9/7). This collaboration between Human Initiative and several other organizations aims to encourage people to develop a love for the environment.

The Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) has raised concerns about the alarming condition of rivers in DKI Jakarta. In April 2022, Walhi revealed that the rivers in DKI Jakarta were experiencing moderate to heavy pollution.

Human Initiative, through its Initiative for Disaster Management program, is excited to partner with the Equator Response Team. In this activity, Human Initiative offers new experiences for the community. Apart from providing rubber boat equipment, the organization has deployed volunteers and provided an understanding of the condition of rivers in Jakarta.

Cleaning the Ciliwung River

This environmental education activity is part of a series of ‘River Education’ events that encourage people to develop an affinity for the river by riding rubber boats together. But it is not just about going along the river; the volunteers also encourage the community to collect trash using their rubber boats.

“This activity serves as an educational opportunity for the public to raise environmental awareness and protect the river. As they travel along the river in rubber boats, the community is also encouraged to clean the river of garbage,” said Subur Rojinawi, Senior Officer of Disaster Risk Management at Human Initiative.

In an exclusive interview with ANTARA, participants who took part in the River Education activities expressed great enthusiasm. They engaged in activities ranging from practicing waste sorting to expressing hope for cleaner rivers in Jakarta and the prevention of flooding.

Missed This Moment?

Did you miss this event? Don’t worry, the Khatulistiwa Respon Tim has stated that they will organize River Education sessions every weekend. The aim is to educate the importance of maintaining clean rivers in Jakarta.

Agung Setiawan, Chairman of the Khatulistiwa Respon Tim Foundation, stated to ANTARA that this activity highlights the positive aspects of utilizing the potential of rivers in Jakarta. He hopes that through this initiative, the government can transform the banks of the Ciliwung River into a tourist destination with water transportation facilities.
