Through his speech, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said that Jakarta is topographically in a low position. Because of this, there are three main causes of flooding in Jakarta.

The first cause is tidal flooding on the north coast of the Jakarta area, this will get worse if it rains with high rainfall. Later, the overflow of the estuary will meet the sea water.

The second cause comes when heavy rains occur on the south side of Jakarta so that water flows into 13 rivers in the capital. If the flowing water exceeds the capacity of the 13 rivers, which is 2,300 cubic meters per second, then of course there will be overflow.

Third, flooding can occur when heavy rain occurs in the city. The drainage system in the capital is designed to drain 50 – 100 millimeters of water per day. If the rainfall is so high that the city’s drainage capacity cannot accommodate it, there will be potential for overflow.

Anies Baswedan in his speech emphasized three important things in dealing with this rainy season. The first is to be alert, which means to prepare all possibilities and develop scenarios to deal with the three main causes of flooding in the capital. Furthermore, responsiveness means taking immediate action if a weather forecast appears regarding extreme rainfall. The third is galang or all joint activities involving all existing elements including the government, community, and leadership in all lines to achieve success.
