Situation Report #1 , Gaziantep Earthquake, Turkiye

Turkiye – An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 rocked east of Nurdagi, Gaziantep Province, Turkiye, on February 6, 2023 at 04.00 am local time. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the earthquake occurred at a depth of 24.1 KM and rocked several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon.

Turkiye’s Interior Minister, Suleymon Soylu, said 10 cities were affected by the earthquake in Gaziantep province. Several cities include Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakir and Kilis. Afet ve Acil Durum Yönetimi Başkanlığı (AFAD), which is the Presidency of Disaster and Emergency Management in Turkiye, issued the latest data on 6 February 2023, which stated that at least 76 people died and more than 440 people were injured.

The President of Turkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, wrote his best wishes to his citizens via his Twitter account @RTErdogan (6/2). He said all units will be on standby under the coordination of AFAD which is the Presidency of Disaster and Emergency Management in the State of Turkiye. The head of the Turkish Red Cross said the team was in the process of mobilizing resources for the area, as information indicated there was serious damage, and urged residents to evacuate their homes which had been damaged.
