The Inspiring Story of a Volunteer: Becoming a Nurse and Volunteer is My Path to Being More Beneficial

Human Initiative – Being a nurse is a proud achievement for Siska Almaindah (24). Moreover, this achievement serves as her foundation for contributing more to her community. This is the story of Siska, a nurse who serves as a volunteer in the Human Initiative Volunteer Energy (HIVE) program.

For those pursuing Nursing Education, they might understand what Siska went through to pursue a nursing profession. Siska shared that it took her five years to become a certified nurse and gain the necessary patient care skills. From her learning journey, she eventually embarked on a career at Zainuttaqwa Hospital and Mitra Sehat Clinic in Bekasi, West Java.

However, according to Siska, there is no limit to learning. One way to learn is by being part of a volunteer community like Human Initiative Volunteer Energy (HIVE). Through her involvement with the Human Initiative volunteer community, Siska has created a personal history in various social activities.

“As a nurse, I take pride in being part of Human Initiative’s social activities and being more beneficial. It’s not just about healthcare services, but also engaging in social activities that differ from my profession,” said Siska.

She recounted that her very first activity with HIVE was the Insya Allah Qurban road campaign. In 2021, she and HIVE Bekasi distributed merchandise and brochures as part of the campaign communication. Siska admitted that through this, she gained insight into one of the humanitarian processes related to campaign awareness.

“But that’s not all. There are many other social activities that have been valuable experiences for me. One of them was distributing cooking equipment for the early recovery of the Cianjur Earthquake,” she shared.

Getting a Specialized Education as a Volunteer

“If I hadn’t become a volunteer, I might not have gained this knowledge,” Siska exclaimed.

This statement by Siska reinforced her belief that her choice to become a volunteer was not in vain. Her nursing education taught her how to care for patients. As a volunteer, she expanded her knowledge through simulating the management of large-scale patient care during disasters.

“During the Emergency Response training at the BASARNAS Office, I learned a lot about handling patients through role-sharing. HIVE and Human Initiative facilitated me and other volunteers to receive such education,” Siska explained.

Through cross-organizational meetings and various major events, Siska expanded her connections and shared experiences with fellow volunteers. It’s no surprise that her dedication to humanitarian work extends into her everyday life. Among many things, one of Siska’s habits is to carry a first aid kit wherever she goes.

“I’m always prepared. If there’s an accident, I’m willing to help with minor injuries,” she said with a smile.

Initiator’s Companions, this is Siska’s story. Human Initiative believes that everyone has their journey of goodness that leads to happiness.
