Difficulty to Access Clean Water in East Adonara, Flores

18 December 2021

Based on research from the Indonesia Water Institute, the need for clean water during the Covid-19 pandemic continues to increase. This is due to changes in people’s behavior patterns that are more concerned about health and hygiene during the pandemic. One of them is washing hands frequently which can even be done more than ten times a day.

In addition, the need for clean water for bathing has also increased by 150-210 liters per person per day. This number has increased 3 times from before the pandemic which was only 50-70 liters per person per day. However, it turns out that not all parts of Indonesia have access to clean water equally. Like the East Adonara area, Flores.

Difficulty to Access Clean Water in East Adonara, Flores

Bilal is one of the villages in East Adonara District, East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. This village is one of 21 villages and sub-districts in East Adonara District.

This village is one of the villages affected by the flash floods last April, resulting in the cut off of the waterway from the source to the village.

In the village there are 160 families (KK) or the equivalent of 601 people, most of whom work as farmers and gardeners. The economic level of the village community is middle to lower.

The incident last April left a deep trauma for the local people because until now they have struggled to get clean water even though they are limited in improving the existing situation.

The distance from the water source to the village is about 6.7 KM where the water goes to the residents’ shelters in 3 villages, namely Bilal Village, Bloto Village and Demomodei. The stagnation of water is caused by the pipe which has not been replaced since 2006, so that the pipe is fragile and leaks.

Every day they patch the pipes with rubber inner tubes because they have no money. In addition, the current flowing water is cloudy because it was buried by a landslide and the available water is very limited.
