International Human Solidarity Day is observed every December 20 with the aim of increasing world awareness about solidarity, especially in a global context. In short, the International Human Solidarity Day exists to celebrate the unity of all of us in diversity. This day can also remind governments to honor their every commitment to international agreements.

Commemorating International Human Solidarity Day, Human Initiative has an interesting story from an African refugee, Pak Tendo, who has lived in Indonesia for more than 5 years. Curious what the story is like? Keep reading this article until it’s finished.

The Beginning of Pak Tendo’s Arrival to Indonesia

In 2015, Pak Tendo came to Indonesia from his home country, Uganda. His original goal was to save his life. At that time, Pak Tendo thought that Indonesia was the best choice. “As a refugee, the first thing I have to make sure is that my life is safe. After I feel safe, then I can think of other things,” said Pak Tendo.

He continued, “Life as a refugee in Indonesia is very difficult. There are many issues that I have to face, ranging from social-economies, financial, mental-illness. Especially I can’t speak Indonesian, so I can’t communicate with anyone here except in English. So, generally speaking, life as a refugee is very challenging.”

Pak Tendo, who lives alone in Indonesia, said that his life depends on farming with Pak Roger, who is also from Africa. “I came first to Indonesia before Pak Roger. I know him from the African Refugee Community and was intrigued by his idea of farming on this 3 hectare land. You know right? It’s like meeting the same people as you in a foreign country, like returning home. That’s how I felt when I met Pak Roger,” said Pak Tendo.

Pak Tendo also expressed his gratitude for the kind and friendly attitude of the Indonesian people or the surrounding community. He hopes that in the future he can help more people who are members of his community to get a better quality of life.
