Sugeng Handoko Wins Humanity Award 2021 for Category of Humanity Contribution in the Development Sector

27 January 2022

Jakarta – On Wednesday, December 15, 2021, Human Initiative held Indonesian Humanitarian Congress, which included the Humanity Award agenda. This award is divided into eight categories. One of the awardee is Sugeng Handoko, the Youth Motivator of the Nglanggeran Tourism Village, Yogyakarta for category of humanitarian contributions in the development sector.

His ability to preserve as well as develop his birthplace, Nglanggeran Village, Yogyakarta by changing the habits of the local community to care for the environment brings many benefits, such as inviting many tourists to come to Nglanggeran Village for example.

Initially, local residents did not have any ideas o develop and preserve Nglanggeran Village. This is because the level of urbanization in the village is very high. Many young people there choose to leave the village and look for work in the city. Therefore, Sugeng is strongly determined to make significant changes in his hometown by turning the area into an ecotourism area.

Then, with the help of his colleagues, he started pioneering eco-tourism or more popularly known as ecotourism. To introduce the village, which is currently under construction, Sugeng and his friends also promoted the natural beauty of the Nglanggeran Ancient Volcano. This includes distributing brochures to schools.

For his efforts, Sugeng won many awards. Starting from the Culturepreneur Award 2016 to the most recent one, the Humanity Contribution Category Award in the Development Sector in the Humanity Awards 2021 given by the Human Initiative.

The Nglanggeran village that he manages has also won several awards. One of them, in 2021, represent Indonesia in the Best Tourism Village event from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Sugeng hopes that, in the future, ecotourism in Nglanggeran will continue to develop because the Nglanggeran Ancient Volcano is part of the Gunung Sewu Geopark area which has just been designated as a member of the Global Geopark Network by UNESCO.
