The Struggle of Mrs. Peni Peka to Get Clean Water

16 January 2022

Access to clean water is one of the basic human needs to support daily life. Various activities starting from bathing, washing clothes, to cooking require clean water. However, based on predictions from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), several regions in Indonesia, from Banten to Surabaya or in other words, almost all areas on the North Coast of Java will experience a crisis of clean water availability in 2040.

The Covid-19 pandemic has also contributed to the scarcity of clean water in Indonesia. Some new habits applied due to the pandemic, such as washing hands more often, bathing, or washing increase the amount of water consumption. One of the areas in Indonesia that is also experiencing a clean water crisis is East Adonara, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara.

A middle-aged resident there even had to face this problem. She is Peni Peka, a resident of Bilal Village, East Adonara District, Flores NTT. Age did not dampen the spirit of the 75-year-old woman taking water from village to village.

Every day she has to fetch water for her daily needs. Granny Peni was one of those who felt the impact of the landslide a few months ago which cover the water source and cause water access in the mountain to the village did not flow due to the embankment and damaged pipes.

She hoped that access to clean water would not be difficult anymore, and that she would not have to wait 3 times a week to take turns with the residents next door for water to her village. Oeni is not alone, but she said she happily fetches water because her grandchildren are busy and rarely at home.

Hopefully, with the concern from the Initiator Friends, they can realize the dreams of Granny Peni and the residents in the village affected by the disaster in East Adonara, East Nusa Tenggara. Let’s together with the Human Initiative help Peni Peka at Solusi Peduli.
